How to Tell When Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair

One of the most important appliances in your home is the air conditioner.  The very old, the very young, and those with respiratory problems benefit tremendously from air conditioners.  For the rest of us, cool air inside on hot days makes life much more pleasant.  Sometimes air conditioners will stop suddenly and without warning, but more often, they tend to provide some warning signs that failure is approaching.

Sometimes air conditioners will slowly begin to lose coolant, which results in the air coming from the vents seeming slightly less cool.  When the condenser, which is what most people outside of the heating and cooling industry call the “air conditioner,” makes an unusual sound, it is a sure sign that repair is imminent.  When the condenser begins to make squeaking, knocking, grinding, or rumbling sounds, it is time to call a professional.

Sometimes air conditioners will turn on and off without cooling the home.  Some AC maintenance experts refer to this situation as short-cycling.  When this situation presents itself, it is sometimes due to a slight malfunction of a thermostat that appears to a homeowner as functional.  Another culprit responsible for short-cycling is an air conditioner that’s clogged with dirt and other debris.

Generally speaking, homeowners should avoid trying to fix their own air conditioner.  However, if an air conditioner is not turning on, homeowners can check the thermostat and the circuit breaker to see if one of those things are preventing the air conditioner from working properly.

In order to ensure a comfortable home during the warm months, it is important to contact a professional if any of these warning signs present themselves.  Don’t be fooled by an air conditioner that is making unusual noises and still cooling your home.  This is a sure sign that failure is approaching and uncomfortable temperatures in the home are imminent.
